Making A Folding Camp Stool

camp stool.jpg

With summer just around the corner I wanted to make a folding camping stool. I made it from ash and leather with copper rivets. It should come in handy sat around a camp fire of just used as some extra garden seating.

I started by making the legs. I cut 4 pieces of ash down to the same size and drilled holes in them to accept some dowels. The stool has 3 dowels, 2 to hold the leather seat in place and 1 is the pivot for the folding mechanism.

I did not want the legs to be so square so rounded over the ends using a sander and then rounding over the sides using a router.

The dowels are held in place with wedges. I used the bandsaw to cut slots in the ends of the dowels then I cut wedges out of some oak. They get glued into place and trimmed flush when dry. After giving it a sand down I applied some tung oil and it really shows off the contrast between the ash and oak.

For the seat I got some black leather cut down to size. I then got it fixed into place using some copper rivets.

Thats it all finished. Now I just need to take it out for a test run.
